Where to Start in Crypto in 2024: A Beginner’s Guide

In recent years, many people have grown interested in the world of cryptocurrencies, altcoins, meme coins, Web3, DeFi, NFTs… The list goes on. If you’re looking to get started in crypto in 2024, there are various ways to dive in, whether through building a crypto portfolio, joining an active community or project, orto learning about the tech driving the industry.

Here’s a crypto guide for beginners to help you navigate this exciting space, and find your way with some sensible guidelines to follow.

How to get started in crypto

Before you jump in, it’s essential to have a strategy. The cryptocurrency market and industry can be fast paced, so without a clear plan, mistakes can be costly. Start with these important steps:

Do Your Research: Learn about the projects behind cryptocurrencies. Understanding their purpose, development teams, and roadmaps is crucial for making informed investments.

Manage Risks: Set a clear investment or trading strategy for yourself and find reputable businesses and platforms to rely on for up to date information and resources. Managing risks also includes ensuring you’re taking precautions to be safe.

How Binance Australia protects its users

At last year’s AusCryptoCon in Melbourne, Liam O’Doherty and Rob Thomson from Binance Australia took the stage to discuss The Role of Law Enforcement in Crypto and Web3. This insightful discourse provided a valuable glimpse into Binance Australia’s efforts to protect existing users while assisting new users to confidently navigate the cryptocurrency space.

We asked Rob for some insights on staying safe in crypto.

“First of all, educating yourself is critical. Binance Academy is our free and available best-in-class resource for all users to learn more about scam awareness and how to stay safe in crypto.

There are a variety of scams targeting crypto users. Investment and romance scams are among the most prevalent and are often used in combination, also known as ‘pig butchering’. Some handy tips to help keep yourself safe from these types of scams include:

·   Never answer a cold call approach from someone. These approaches can come from social media sources like Instagram or X (formally Twitter) or private messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.

·   Always DYOR (do your own research) before making any purchases or investments. Always look past the website and research who is behind the project.

·   Binance will never contact you from private messaging services with investment advice, discussion of purchases, or requests for funds.

·   No legitimate company, service, give away or person will ask you for funds, passwords or login details.

·   Always have multi-factor authentication on your Binance account and other apps. This includes the use of an authenticator app.

·   Use a password manager to create and store your passwords. Never share your passwords with anyone.

To stay clear of common scams, maintain constant vigilance and awareness of the schemes employed by these parties. Always ensure you’re using official websites/applications, and remember: if an investment seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

Popular Cryptocurrencies to Watch

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana are some of the most well-known cryptocurrencies in the space. Bitcoin remains the OG and most widely recognized store of value. Ethereum is largely known for its smart contract functionality and ecosystem, and Solana offers a scalable solution for projects wanting to build applications and solutions with longevity. These cryptocurrencies are often where newcomers start their crypto investing or trading journey, due to their established networks, thriving communities and features.

Develop a Network of Experienced Crypto Friends

Above all, the best way to get plugged into crypto is to form a network of trusted partners, friends and mentors.

AusCryptoCon is an unparalleled networking experience for Crypto and Web3 enthusiasts. With thousands of industry leading speakers, businesses and projects all under one roof, this event is your best opportunity in a year to rub shoulders with some of the best in the industry.

With that comes the benefit of growing a network of experienced, supportive peers, if you’re new to crypto trading, investing or projects in general.

Use the event to meet new people, ask your favourite exchanges or businesses questions, get plugged into new communities, and glean valuable (and often exclusive) insights.

Your network is your net worth, as some would say. Surround yourself with peers who have the same goals as you, consider finding a trading buddy to support your journey and hold you accountable to your strategy, and discover what businesses and service providers might best suit your financial goals.
